Are Hospice Donations Tax Deductible?
Tillery Compassionate Care of Stanly & Montgomery County provides at-home hospice care and palliative care to individuals and their families who are facing life-altering diseases and end-of-life decisions.
Tillery Compassionate Care is a nonprofit organization, meaning individuals are never turned away for services due to lack of insurance or ability to pay. Because we benefit from the kindness of our donors, we have been asked, ‘are hospice donations tax deductible?’
We’ll explore the answers and provide useful resources.
Tillery Compassionate Care: Serving All Regardless of Their Ability to Pay
Tillery Compassionate Care can’t do it alone. As a nonprofit organization, Tillery Compassionate Care depends on the generosity of donors, such as yourself, to help fulfill its mission of helping others in their time of need.
Tax-deductible donations, of any amount, allow Tillery Compassionate Care the ability to pay for services not covered by Medicare or private insurance.
Tax-deductible donations enable Tillery Compassionate Care’s at-home hospice caregivers the opportunity to provide care to individuals who have the peace of mind of knowing such care is not costing them or putting a financial burden on their family.
How Does Tillery Compassionate Care Use Donations?
Donations also enable Tillery Compassionate Care to:
- Host Camp Forget-Me-Not, a camp for youth grieving the loss of a loved one.
- Have Light the Lake, a water lantern celebration of loved ones lost.
- Provide mailings to help with the healing process.
- Conduct the annual Angel Tree Lighting, where individuals may purchase a hand-crafted angel in memory of a loved one.
- Hold regularly scheduled grief counseling events.
According to the IRS, “the written acknowledgment required to substantiate a charitable contribution of $250 or more must contain the following information:
- Name of the organization;
- Amount of cash contribution;
- Description (but not value) of non-cash contribution;
- Statement that no goods or services were provided by the organization, if that is the case;
- Description and good faith estimate of the value of goods or services, if any, that organization provided in return for the contribution; and
- Statement that goods or services, if any, that the organization provided in return for the contribution consisted entirely of intangible religious benefits, if that was the case.
In addition, a donor may claim a deduction for contributions of cash, check, or other monetary gifts only if the donor maintains certain written records.”
While some individuals may make a one-time donation or an annual one, others take philanthropy to another level by including Tillery Compassionate Care in their estate planning.
Whichever way you prefer to make a donation, it is greatly appreciated by Tillery Compassionate Care and the individuals and families it serves.
